Shaé Smith is a non-binary queer community healer, decolonial therapist, storyteller, and mama, grounded on Lenape land. As the founder and lead circle keeper of chosen•kin, a community-based project, Shaé creates a transformative platform for Black queer and trans parents to connect through storytelling, art-making, and collective care. With a deep commitment to joy, rest, ancestral wisdom, and healing practices, Shaé believes these elements are foundational to achieving liberation and resilience within marginalized communities.

Through chosen•kin, Shaé fosters spaces where Black queer and trans parents can thrive by engaging with their stories, reimagining relationships to intergenerational trauma, and embracing healing justice practices. T

Shaé is deeply honored to be the first inaugural recipient of the Michael Hinson Mission Grant, a recognition that reflects their unwavering commitment to community and collective healing.

SEAN ROACH

Sean "Shiz" R is a multi-talented artist and dynamic community leader based in the Mantua/Parkside section of West Philadelphia, an area known as the "promise zone." Starting his career as a makeup artist (MUA), wardrobe stylist/designer, and emcee, Sean has since emerged as a prominent figure in the Philadelphia arts scene, leading initiatives that uplift and empower diverse communities. As the creative lead of The U-City Art Walk, a platform that mirrors the mission of the U-City Arts Foundation, Sean has built a reputation for fostering community engagement, supporting artists, creatives, small businesses, and, importantly, LGBTQ+ and queer communities.

For over a decade, Sean’s experience in fashion and his advocacy for creative communities have made him a key figure in shaping Philadelphia’s arts landscape. His leadership, vision, and dedication shine as a beacon of support, not only for his own work but for the many artists, creators, and individuals he mentors and connects with along the way.
