HISTORY
PBGP is a recognized independent corporation in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and is currently housed at The COLOURS Organization, Inc. COLOURS served as the official sponsor of PBGP from the inception in August 1999 until PBGP received its own 501 (c) (3) status from the Federal government in April 2004. PBGP has set the standard for “Pride” events targeting people of color and has seen its activity attendance grow to well over 15,000 participants.
In previous years, PBGP has participated as one of the sponsors of The National LGBT Task Force surveys on “Pride” activities across the country and received high marks for its’ organizing and return of surveys to the national organization. Additionally, PBGP was extended membership into the International Federation of Black Prides in 2002, which offered PBGP more exposure across the country.
Philadelphia Black Gay Pride, Inc. (PBGP) targets its festival to people of African Descent who are members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual and Transgender community. However, all are welcomed and PBGP does not discriminate against those who are not members of the targeted population.
PBGP is affiliated with The International Federation of Black Prides (IFBP). The IFBP was organized during DC Black Pride of May, 1999 by a coalition of black Pride organizers representing Chicago, North Carolina, New York, Atlanta, Detroit, Minneapolis (Twin Cities), and Washington, DC. The organizers saw a need to organize the twenty plus black prides in the United States and abroad to network, develop sponsorship strategies, provide technical assistance, mentor and support one another.
In November 2000, the original seven cities plus Los Angeles and Jacksonville formalized the International Federation of Black Prides and adopted bylaws, elected officers and started the process of incorporation and applying to the IRS non profit status. In April 2001, the IFBP extended invitations to the other remaining black prides as the organization prepared for its first annual meeting under the new bylaws. IFBP has produced the first ever brochure listing all of the 2001 Black Prides in the United States. Since 2002, the IFBP expanded its membership to include Baltimore, Boston, Memphis, St. Louis, Kansas City, Philadelphia, Nashville, Charlotte and South Africa.
